If you are suffering from a mood disorder known as bipolar disorder, mental health and wellness therapy can be utilized to effectively treat the extreme symptoms. Bipolar disorder is a mental illness that causes dramatic and severe shifts in a person’s mood, energy, and ability to think clearly throughout daily activities. Individuals with this disorder experience heightened high and low moods known as mania and depression for a specific period of time. Bipolar disorder can be treated and if left alone, the disorder can worsen over time. Proper counseling includes unique therapies, medication, and a healthier lifestyle to allow for people to live well with the condition. Counseling of Southwest Florida offers tailored therapeutic programs for mental illnesses and we can help you re-gain a normal and healthy lifestyle.

Common Symptoms of Bipolar Disorder

The symptoms and severity of this disease greatly varies depending on the person; someone can experience mania or depression for an extended amount of time, or even go years without experiencing any symptoms. Extreme bipolar episodes of mania or depression may include hallucinations or delusions.

Mania

To be properly diagnosed with bipolar disorder, one must have experienced at least one episode of mania before. During this “high”, a person’s mood can become rapidly more irritable and their behavior can become more unpredictable. Mania can also be associated with frequent impulsive behavior and reckless decision making.

Depression

The other extreme symptoms of bipolar disorder include a heavy depression. The lows are often so debilitating that everyday activities and relationships are severely affected. Individuals experiencing a depressive state have difficulty falling or staying asleep while others can sleep far more than usual. Every decision becomes overwhelming and emotional during a depressive episode. The guilt and helplessness can lead to suicidal thoughts.

There is not one single cause to this disorder, and scientists believe that there are many contributing factors such as genetics, unusual stress, and brain structure and function that account for bipolar disorder. While the symptoms of bipolar disorder can greatly affect someone’s life, there are therapeutic methods that can allow individuals to function and live a happy life.
